Strikers The Difference For Cardiff

Cardiff City turned in their most impressive attacking performance of the season on Saturday as they ran the Hull City defence ragged and forged a number of opportunities.


The midfield looked impressive with Gavin Rae particularly lively – but this is the same midfield four (Ledley-McPhail-Rae-Parry) that we have favoured for much of the season.


The change came up-front, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink (wasteful and static against Leicester City) was relegated to the bench and summer signing from Sheffield Wednesday Steve MacLean was recalled.



Essentially we paired a transfer-listed workhorse, reknowned for a poor goalscoring record, and a new free-transfer with little gametime and recently recovered from injury. The results were immediate.



The added movement of Thompson and MacLean caused problems for Hull, they pulled the defence wide – shifting the Tigers midfield and creating the crucial space for our midfield to work the ball around. Gaps opened up, and for once, we looked able to exploit them. Thompson went close on several occasions while MacLean saw a shot go wide, and another blocked.


In short, the two strikers looked like they’d played together for ages, and we put in an energetic and threatening performance. The defensive lapses didnt help, and we did miss a few chances.



The second half, Hull tightened up but we still looked capable – that doesn’t always happen with our side but with the added threat we had – we stole a late (and deserved) point. Myhill was superb for Hull, Thommo got a goal, we created chances and looked dangerous throughout the game – a much better performance from a totally different side.
