Cardiff City’s long-serving defender Chris Barker, currently on loan at Colchester Untied, is almost certain to leave at the end of the season and is hoping to earn a permanent deal with the U’s.

When Barker joined Colchester, they were struggling at the foot of the table and Cardiff were sitting pretty at the top. Since then, the fortunes of both sides have changed miraculously and Colchester are now above Cardiff and still in contention for a play-off place.

Cardiff manager Dave Jones is still in the market for a left-back during the summer and could do far worse than a player of Barker’s quality.

The fullback is experienced at Championship level and was Cardiff’s player of the season a couple of years ago. He has been integral to Colchester’s fantastic season, and they have outperformed the misfiring Bluebirds.

Dave Jones however prefers a more attacking type of full-back who can overlap and put more crosses in so Barker’s time as a Bluebird looks over.

‘I would be happy to stay if an offer is there – the club have been fantastic for me, the fans and the players are great and I have really enjoyed it.’

‘I came to Colchester to play football and that is what I have done so we will see what happens in the summer.’
