Cardiff City ‘Mystery’ Defender Drops Off Radar

Cardiff City signed a ‘highly-rated’ young centre-back in the summer but Bluebirds fans could easily be forgiven for not knowing who Darren Dennehy is after the defender has dropped completely off the radar since he joined back at the end of June 2008.

Dennehy is a Rebublic of Ireland U21 International and was highly regarded at previous club Everton. In fact the Toffees were keen to keep the defender and offered him a deal. However, Dennehy chose to leave for Cardiff City in search of more opportunities for first team football.

That has not exactly been the case. Not once has 20-year old Dennehy represented the Bluebirds first team, nor does he make the bench. That includes the league cup, often a good opportunity to test youngsters.

Understandably the likes of Roger Johnson and Gabor Gyepes have done well, with Darren Purse in reserve meaning that Dennehy’s chances were likely to be limited but he can’t be happy with the season so far being so excluded from first team affairs.

The only possible chances Dennehy can now hope for is that Dave Jones was saving him as a ‘secret weapon’, or a host of injuries/suspensions taking their toll. Johnson is a target for several Premiership clubs while Darren Purse is out of contract at the end of this season. If Dennehy is a possible sucessor for either, surely he should have featured….?

Dave jones has a superb record in bringing on centre-halves. Purse has bee a stalwart, Loovens and Johnson absolute bargains….i’m just worried that dennehy hasnt made a single appearance….

well he is only young and i’m sure dave jones has told the player he would need to wait for his chance in the 1st team.
