Cardiff City were short of full-back options last season and following some indifferent form shown by Tony Capaldi – Dave Jones decided to strengthen that area with the free-transfer capture of Miguel Comminges.

However, neitehr player has broken into the starting XI, Capaldi has been injured while Comminges is erratic and yet to impress. However, despite these shortcomings – it was another free transfer signing which has formed part of one of the stingiest defences in the league – former Crystal Palace and Liverpool midfielder Mark Kennedy. We recently became the most unbeatable team in the division (see here) and Kennedy has certainly contributed to that.

Kennedy initially stood in at left-back but has looked comfortable, assured and solid at the back. He has understandably chosen to remain solid in defence and has found it difficult to support the attack without genuine pace to help him get back into position. Nevertheless, with Capaldi now back in full training and available for matchday squads – it seems Kennedy will be difficult to displace.

A recent poll on this Vital Cardiff City website invited readers to vote who along with Kevin McNaughton (equally comfortable on left or right) should be our full-back from our various options:

Mark Kennedy (52%)
Tony Capaldi (21%)
Darcy Blake (10%)
Miguel Comminges (8%)
Someone New! (5%)
Joe Ledley (4%)

Miguel Comminges is a stand out name in that list having been on the fringes of the first team, Bluebirds fans are disappointed with his contribution so far. Additionally, fans are against switching Ledley to full-back (which would allow the inclusion of Whittingham) and prefer to see the Welshman in midfield.

Well done Mark, he has certainly proved the doubters (myself included) wrong and long may he continue to do so!
