Cardiff Appeal Over Thommo Red Card

Steve Thompson has been handed an automatic 3 match ban for his rash challenge on Saturday which earnt him a straight red card from referee Uriah Rennie.

This would mean the in form striker misses Cardiff City games against: Sheffield United (home), Watford (away) and Preston (away).

However manager Dave Jones was incensed by the decision and Cardiff City chairman Peter Ridsdale has confirmed that the club WILL appeal against the red card and attempt to get the ban overturned.

I can’t see the appeal being successful, it was incredibly clumsy and caused the Bristol City goalkeeper to be substituted after the gash swelled. Appeals are rarely upheld, with most being for incidents where TV coverage can confirm that intent was not there, or no contact was made (e.g. by an elbow).

Thommo’s suspension is likely to mean a return to action for Robbie Fowler, although Steve MacLean has been preferred from the substitutes bench recently as Fowler regains fitness following a hip operation.

Ridsdale confirmed today: “We will be appealing against the red card.”
