Cardiff’s Championship season continued with a one-nil win against Blackburn at the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday to see the Bluebirds back to within four-points of the play-off places.

The breakthrough came just ahead of the hour when Joe Mason followed up after Craig Noone had seen his initial effort blocked, with that enough to see the Bluebirds to the win.

Cardiff had the better of the few first half chances with Anthony Pilkington (denied by Blackburn ‘keeper Jason Steele) and Joe Ralls having the chances, which he curled just over with Charlton loanee Tony Watt having a couple of chances to make sure but the one goal was enough.

These were the other results.

QPR 1-2 Hull

Saturday 2nd January 2016

Preston 2-1 Rotherham
Reading 0-1 Bristol City

Not the start to the year Brighton wanted, with the way the last ended carrying on into the New Year with a one-nil defeat to Wolves at the Amex Stadium meaning the promotion bid took another setback.

Brentford also suffered a blow to their play-off hopes too with a late defeat at St Andrew’s meaning Birmingham won two-one to keep their play-off bid going whereas the battle of the top two ended with Middlesbrough remaining firm favourites for the title with a two-one win over Derby at the Riverside Stadium.

The relegation battling sides, Bolton and Rotherham were beaten by Huddersfield and Preston, respectively, to leave them starting 2016 very much in trouble with Charlton collecting what could prove to be a crucial point from a one-one draw at the Valley with Nottingham Forest.
