Cardiff City face a continued battle to keep hold of Dutch centre-back Glenn Loovens after more clubs joined his admirers.

A £250k signing from Feyenoord, Loovens has proved superb business and caught the eye last season with commanding and assured performances. Cardiff City do not have to sell and would insist on a fee of at least £3m.

Rnagers showed initial interest and sent Ally McCoist and scouts to Portugal to watch Loovens in the Algarve Cup. Now, Ajax and Fulham have joined the chase and all three could prove tempting for the player, who has stalled on signing a new deal hoping for a dream move to the Premiership.

Now would be a terrible time to disrupt the squad and lose a key member of the team with little time to secure a replacement. Roger Johnson is likely to start, while Darren Purse and Dennehy could also step into the first team.

We don’t want to lose him, and he remains happy here at present. However, with only a year left on the contract and little prospect of another being agreed soon – it may be tempting to cash in now.
