With a historic FA Cup semi-final place already booked, Cardiff City must turn their attention to the league – starting tonight when Hull City are the visitors to Ninian Park.
It looks for all money like Cardiff will finish in mid-table, with their impressive cup-run the highlight of an inconsistent and frustrating season.
However, a brief look at the Championship table tells another story:
Cardiff City lie in 18th place on 45 points and that is just 4 points ahead of Leicester City (in the relegation zone).
Manager Dave Jones however is focussing on climbing the table with the aim of securing a play-off spot (11 points away)- that’s how tight this division is. He told the Western Mail:
“We can still mount a play-off charge, that`s why we are here and that`s what we want to do.’
“There are plenty of points still to fight for. It`s a tall order, but we want to kick on.’
City have either 2 or 3 games in hand over most of their rivals. Put simply, if they win those games, and continue on a run – they are back in the mix but if they were to lose those games in hand – relegation is a realistic and disasterous possibility.
We must not get dragged into a relegation fight, and that must begin when play-off hopefuls Hull City come visiting tonight. No Cup hangover, but a similar type of performance is needed. Bluebirds fans must turn out in numbers, show their appreciation for the Middlesbrough triumph and help the side to 3 points tonight.
