Cardiff City’s experienced left-sided player Mark Kennedy was a suprise addition to the Bluebirds squad having been released by Crystal Palace with many failing to see how he would fit into our, much younger side.
However, one thing is certain and thats that Kennedy has played in more games than he, the fans and manager Dave Jones would have expected.
The former Liverpool man has played in thirty-five league games, in addition to four in the cup competitions. That makes him nearly an ever-present: only McNaughton, Rae, Ledley and Johnson have started more games than Kennedy. He has also adapted to a new position, making the left-back slot his own when pre-season many predicted it would be a scrap between Capaldi and Comminges – neither has had a look-in.
Kennedy has arguably been one of the success stories of the season, forming a firm understanding with the likes of Johnson and Gyepes while his take-no-risks, solid brand of defending has served us well.
Of late, however, things have not looked so easy for Kennedy with the likes of Chris Eagles (Burnley), Chris Sedgewick (Preston) and Giovani (Ipswich) causing real problems down Cardiff City’s left flank. A woeful own goal at Preston and some un-characteristic indecision suggest Kennedy may at last be struggling with the pace of these games.
His experience is a great asset, and he still has plenty to offer Cardiff City but I would NOT play him against Sheffield Wednesday. Capaldi, Comminges, Darcy Blake or even Adam Matthews must start – giving them the chance to stake a claim while also allowing Kennedy a rest.
The Republic of Ireland International turns 33 shortly and tom play so many games at Championship pace and level is a big ask. He has proved many (including myself) wrong but does now need a rest, with the rest of the team also struggling for form – Kennedy’s diagonal ball from the back to Bothropyd is both predictable and frustrating.
