Cardiff City have been given a vote of confidence by former Middlesborough striker Andy Campbell ahead of our final league game where we will look to stop the rot and pick up our form ahead of (hopefully) a play-off semi-final and final.
Campbell was the unlikely hero when we last gained promotion to the Championship back in 2003. Fans will remember with wide smiles and Gareth Whalley clipped the ball forward for the out-of-favour Campbell to race clear and plat an unstoppable rocket over QPR’s Chris Day – a great occasion for City fans.
Campbell was a disappointment at City after a great loan spell (he once scored 4 in a 7-1 romp at Oldham). He failed to hold down a starting position and was largely poor in that season, replacing Robert Earnshaw in the play-off final as a last resort.
The similarities are clear for any who remember that successful 2003 season. We were there or there abouts all season only for some appalling late form see us snatch the last play-off spot by the skin of our teeth. The rest, as they say, is history but fans will be hoping to see a repeat should we make the play-offs.
Andy Campbell reckons we will, and can see us getting promoted. He told the SW Echo:
“When you look back at those results going into the play-offs it`s difficult to say how we earned promotion. Once we finished sixth, though, everything changed and we all knew we were capable of going up.”
“I`ve watched Cardiff on television this season and they have some terrific players. The key is making sure they are in the mix – and that it is in their hands.”
“If they get back to defending solidly as a team then the goals will come as they have quality strikers in Ross McCormack and Jay Bothroyd.”
Since leaving Cardiff City, Campbell has played for Oxford, Doncaster, Dunfermline, Halifax and now plies his trade in the Unibond League for Bradford Park Avenue. He was little short of a disaster as a Bluebird but will forever be remembered for ‘that’ goal.
