Cardiff City midfielder Peter Whittingham emerged as a transfer target for newly promoted Nottingham Forest a few weeks ago. Speculation has increased following winger Kris Commons’ decision to move to Derby County with Forest now stepping up their chase for former Aston Villa man Whittingham.

Whitts has been an important member of the team this season, effective on the right side of midfield and cutting in onto his favoured left foot. He has produced some moments of magic, and scored some important goals for the Bluebirds.

However, he does tend to drift out of games and his defensive work needs improvement. Technically he is very gifted, but rarely gets to show it and seems unable to dominate a game which may see Dave Jones choose to cash in on the player.

He cost Cardiff City £300k a season and a half ago, and City would certainly be looking to recoup that money.

In short, he is a good player, with a future at this level but remains a luxury in the team and is a creative influence who could be replaced.
