Johnson To Become New Cardiff City Captain ?

Cardiff City defender Roger Johnson is to be offered the Bluebirds captaincy in a bid to persuade the ambitious former Wycombe Wanderers man to remain at Cardiff City for at least another year.


With club captain Darren Purse now departed to join Sheffield Wednesday, and doubts over the pedigree of Stephen McPhail, the future of Joe Ledley and the fitness of Riccy Scimeca – we are lacking a natural leader likely to be on the field for much of the season.


Gavin Rae has led the team briefly in the past, but even he will find his place under threat as we will surely look to strengthen the central midfield position over the summer.



However, in Roger Johnson Cardiff City have a vocal leader, and one who always plays when fit. Roger is certainly passionate, and is not afraid to tell team-mates what he thinks. The City keepers were on the end of a few verbal assaults this season when failing to collect balls Roger felt were the goalkeeper’s responsibility. Johnson led the team at Wycombe despite his relatively young age and is clearly a strong character on and off the field. He, along with Michael Chopra is the joker of the dressing room and appears the only likely choice of our current squad to lead next season.


Questions have been raised as to why Jones has previously plumped for the likes of Ledley and McPhail ahead of Johnson with neither midfield player vocal, or a natural leader. It has been suggested that Roger Johnson is perhaps to big a character, that his ego and passion might alienate other plays and harm team spirit. Dave Jones will clearly have his reasons as to why he has never handed the armband to Roger, even down to our 5th choice Gavin Rae ahead of him.


The majority of Cardiff City fans will be more than happy to see Roger lead the team out at the new stadium – especially if it helps persuade him to stay. We are resigned to losing Ledley, and in Roger Johnson we have another highly regarded player surely destined for the Premiership. We need to keep some of our brightest talent here, and with Johnson as captain next season – we will have made a good decision.
