The Christmas period is a crucial time for all clubs in the football leagues and in some cases can shape a clubs fortunes for the rest of the year. The busy schedule is tough for the players and those team with the best fitness, or strongest squad to rotate can often fare better and go on to end the season stronger.
Last year, Cardiff were flying high but starting to falter after blistering early season form. However, over Christmas we failed to win a game. We drew the boxing day clash with Plymouth Argyle, despite a brace from Steve Thompson. We did pick up other draws but lost disappointingly to Southend before finally securing a win at Wolves in the New Year.
This year was a different story altogether. Every Cardiff fan and player has been dissappointed with the early season form, but recently, form and results have improved and we actually saw a uperb return of points over the four festive games.
At home, Sheffield United and Plymouth Argyle were both dispatched 1-0. United are a star-studded team, with far more resources than City while Plymouth are a good team who work hard and are flying high in the Championship.
Away fromk home, we beat Preston 2-1 under difficult circumstances with a spirited fightback while then league leaders Watford were played off the park but grapped a last ditch equaliser they really didn’t deserve.
The makes it 10 points from the Christmas 12, an outstanding return especially with key players like Robbie Fowler and Riccardo Scimeca missing.
The hard work doesn’t stop here, we have dragged ourselves into the top half, not far from the play-offs and must continue the advance and improvements. We are now nearing where we expected to be and everyone has aspirations to be higher, the signs are there – now it’s time to puch on.
