Cardiff’s Whittingham on fire

Cardiff City have really picked up the pace in recent weeks after a barren spell either side of Christmas saw them slip down the table. The recent return to form came immediately after the bolstering of the squad in the January transfer window.

Numerous players moved into Ninian Park, and several have been involved with first team affairs. Walton deputised ably in Scimeca’s absence, Jason Byrne scored his first goal for City in the winner against Wolves. However it has been the new-boy from Aston Villa who has made the biggest impression.

Whittingham made his debut against Southend, as a substitute, but has since played a part in every game and impressed. Whittingham has three goals so far, including one wondergoal from 25 yards against Coventry. A certain contender for ‘goal of the season’. Others coming against Barnsley and Preston.

Aside from the goals, Whittingham has also contributed with several assists. His cross was converted by Roger Johnson on friday and his late trickery left a fullback floundering and Chopra with an easy finish to mean 2 assists and a goal for the winger against Preston.

Whittingham also showed his versatility in switching to an unfamiliar left-back role after Ledley/McNaughton were crocked against Barnsley. For a £350 fee, still finding his feet at Championship level and playing consistently week after week, Whittingham looks an excellent prospect and improving steadily each game.

The 22 year old made over 50 Premiership appearances for Villa, including 4 this season, scoring one goal. He also had recent loan spells with Burnley and Derby. Credit goes to Dave Jones for attracting Whitts to the club and we look forward to watching him improve and keep contributing to Cardiff City’s promotion bid.
