Cardiff City’s captain and centre-back Darren Purse is back in contention for Saturday’s clash with Barnsley after coming through a reserve team game unscathed.

Purse played the full 90 minutes in a behind-closed-doors fixture against Swansea City reserves. Regular first team players Chris Gunter, Peter Whittingham and Steve Thompson also made appearances in a 1-0 defeat for Cardiff.

Purse had undergone surgery on the medial meniscus in his knee, but contracted an infection in the knee which swelled and caused Purse’s weight to plummet. However he has returned to full training and suffered no reaction after yesterday’s runout.

Purse adds competition and leadership to the defensive line but is likely to be named on the bench for the weekend’s game against Barnsley FC.
