Cardiff Return Schmeichel To City

Cardiff City must again search for the successor to Neil Alexander between the Bluebirds’ posts after Kasper Schemichel was returned grudgingly to his parent club Manchester City after a 2 month loan spell ended.

There’s little doubt in my mind that having a settled and solid goalkeeper behind them, helped the squad massively and was a factor in the improvement in form.

Kasper’s first game saw Scunthorpe’s Jim Goodwin fire past him across the body and some wayward kicking from the great Dane. Since then however, Schmeichel has been imperious and has impressed many at Ninian Park.

His enthusiasm is contagious and he’s having a great time even warming up. Some of the saves have been world class, for example the star jump against Leicester City, the save with the legs against Preston and the acrobatic block to the overhead kick with Plymouth’s final touch of the game.

All in all, Kasper appeared 14 times for Cardiff City and form has improved dramatically since the 3-0 defeat to Charlton Athletic in Kasper’s third game. There have been 5 clean sheets.

Although there are areas he needs to work on, kicking and decision making amongst them. There’s little doubt he is an exceptional goalkeeper in the making. Comparisons with his father (Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel) were always likely, but it may just be justified.

Schmeichel returns to Manachester City having done his bit for Cardiff City. Of course, we’d dearly love to keep him until the end of the season, but there’s little to no chance of a permanent deal after the potential and form he has shown. There is rumoured interest from European giants Barcelona, but for now he returns to the bench for Man City and Sven Goran Eriksson.

Thanks Kasper, and all the best for the future.
