Cardiff City’s midfielder Riccy Scimeca has undergone a tricky double operation on the troublesome groin injury that saw him sidelined for the latter part of last season and ruled him out of the pre-season training.

Scimeca did not travel with the rest of the squad to Portugal for the pre-season tour, but has begun re-habilitation in a bid to return sometime in September. It seems unlikely that he will be fit before then and is resigned to missing the start of the season.

Even after Scimeca returns, he will need some time to build up his fitness and match sharpness and he will be weeks behind the rest of the squad.

Scimeca was a force for the Bluebirds in midfield last term and formed a vital part of the team. His dominant and steady performances allowed freedom for other players and they certainly missed his ball-winning skills when he was out.

Scimeca’s place will almost certainly be taken by new recruit Gavin Rae who impressed during the 2-1 win over Vitoria de Setubal and is a similar type of player to Scimeca.

The Bluebirds will hope to have Riccy back and fit asap after struggling to cover injuries last year. However, they must be careful not to rush him back and suffer further recurrent injury.
