Cardiff City have taken veteran left-back Alan Wright on loan from Sheffield United. The 35 year old has enjoyed spells at Blackburn Rovers and Aston Villa and has played most of his career in the Premiership.

Wright is a left-back by trade but, although versatile, is expected to play on the left with Scottish international Kevin McNaughton swapping sides to the right. McNaughton is happy to play either side but is right footed so will look to continue his consistent form on the right side of defence.

The loan deal made necessary before the deadline for loans tonight with Kerrea Gilbert out for the foreseeable future and James Chambers refused an extended loan deal in South Wales.

Wright is a solid defender but does not get forward as well as Gilbert and has scored just 7 goals in close to 500 league appearances but he will add fresh blood and a cool, experienced head to the dressing room. The loan deal lasts until January, when the transfer window opens, and Dave Jones will probably be looking elsewhere for a permanent signing but hopefully Wright can make an impression ans fit well into the quality already in the side.
