Yesterday, a poll on the VitalCardiff homepage invited readers to vote as to whether Steve Thompson should have kept his place for yesterday’s trip to Southampton. All indication in the media was that Dave Jones was going to stick with an unchanged line-up, but he went with Jason Byrne up-front instead, most likely due to Southampton’s height at the back with Powell and Lundekvam.

Although fans have pointed to Thompson’s lack of goals, the majority were in favour of Thommo starting last night with 37% not considering dropping him.

28% thought he should get more time before being dropped, but the same numer felt he needed a rest.

Having not scored in nearly three months, Thommo needed just 2 minutes off the bench to get the goal, he and the team desperately needed. He’s likely to start the next game and will have renewed spring in his step.

Manager Dave Jones, has shown faith in all his players and explained his decision to rest the big striker:

‘I just felt Thompson needed a break, a rest, he’s been up there all season working his socks off and getting battered.’

‘I’m pleased for him now because he’s waited a long time for a goal.’
