Cardiff City midfielder Stephen McPhail has undergone the operation he needed to re-attach his thigh muscle to the bone and will now face an agonising spell on the sidelines.

McPhail will be out for three months, suggesting he could be back in training sometime in February. Whether there will be enough time remaining for him to returnm to full fitness and break back into the side remains to be seen and this injury represents a massive blow for the Irishman who has recently returned to form and once again was a creative force in our midfield.

The three month obsence means that Cardiff City will be without an experienced and influential player for a significant chunk of the season. Joe Ledley and Gavin Rae are the two starters in central midfield at present with Sol Taiwo and Riccy Scimeca providing back-up. Neither have featured much this season and we look woefully short of options, in an already weak area.

Peter Whittingham will be fit for the next game, and could provide another option in the middle, allowing Ross McCormack or Joe Ledley to play on the left. However, a loan acquisition would appeal more to Bluebirds’ fans and Dave Jones / Peter Ridsdale now need to speak out on the likelihood of a replacement.
