Cardiff City full-back Tony Capaldi is ready to leave the Bluebirds and expects to find a new club during the January transfer window following a lack of opportunities in the CCFC first team.
The news is hardly surprising given the number of full-backs currently at the club and Capaldi’s lack or gametime and form. Currently Mark Kennedy is the first choice left-back although Kevin McNaughton will surely challenge strongly for that role as he makes a return to fitness. On the right, Matthews, Quinn and Darcy Blake are all options while Guadaloupe International Miguel Comminges is also facing an uncertain future.
Capaldi told the South Wales Echo:
“To be honest I need regular football now. I can`t just keep coming in every four or five weeks. I`ve spoken to the gaffer and we`ll see what happens from here. If I`m not needed and I have to move on then fair enough. We`ll see what happens in January.”
“I would love to stay at Cardiff and play, but I might now just have to move on. It would be sad, but you do have to hold your hands up and say if it`s not meant to be at Cardiff, then it`s not meant to be.”
Capaldi joined on a free transfer from Plymouth Argyle prior to the 2007-08 season but was offered a hefty weekly wage at Cardiff City. Although he played a big role in his first season, he failed to really convince the supporters and was seen as a weak link. Since then, Capaldi has struggled to hold down a first team place.
Cardiff City would probably not get a fee for the experienced Championship and Northern Ireland defender bue his departure would free up valuable space in the wage budget and potentially allow for a new signing. With the apparent strength in depth at full-back, Capaldi is a luxury – and not that attractive a luxury!
