Cardiff City’s Five Stars: Can We Keep Them?

Cardiff City have for some time now been a selling club, forced to part with their brightest talent to balance the books and claw their way back towards the black.

Now however, those times appear to be relenting and we are no longer forced to sell. It is clear though, that we will sell players, but at a better price than we used to have to accept.

There are 5 players who, to my mind, are the stars of our squad. Plenty of players like Gavin Rae, Stephen McPhail, Peter Whittingham etc are good players who have performed important roles for us – but could be replaced.

These players are: Roger Johnson, Glenn Loovens, Kevin McNaughton, Joe Ledley and Aaron Ramsey. All enjoyed a superb season, and all are still young and improving.

Peter Ridsdale recently told the Echo:

“The ideal scenario is for us to keep our players, but that is not something which is likely.

“I would expect some comings and goings in the summer, but we would do that in the best way possible to make sure we are even stronger at the start of next season than we were when we finished this one.”

Our most sellable assets, are of course the ones we would most like to keep. All the other players in our squad could be replaced for the right fee but Cardiff City fans must be resigned to losing some of the best players also.

Aaron Ramsey looks almost certain to leave, with Manchester United or Arsenal his most likely destination. If we can keep the other 4 ‘stars’, bring in 2 good strikers and keep or replace the other members of the squad – we will have a decent shot at promotion. Add to that an attacking midfielder and a full-back – it could be an excellent season next year.

We as supporters do not know the full extent of the finances, I’d be prepared to allow Ramsey to leave (for a hefty fee of course) if we can keep hold of Joe Ledley – but then, it’s not really up to us is it?!?

    damn right!
I think the best way for Cardiff is to sell Rembo for good money and keep all other top players.
The problem positions that need new players – goalkeeper, left back and striker.

    Hi guys,
fan from Sydney here. No, I haven’t just jumped ship to Cardiff on the back of the F.A. Cup, been a fan since I was 15 – now 22.

Have been visiting this site all season, and thought it was time to become a member 🙂

I’d be up for the selling of Ramsey (for a top price), only if we we get to keep Ledley. I heard that United might buy Ramsey and then loan him out to us for next season only. One more year in Championship football, and then he might be ready to step up into the big league. Seems like the perfect option for both clubs. Hopefully by then we’ll be up there too 🙂

Ridsdale and jones say contradicting things each day..Only the day before he said we will not be signing any new players, and paying their wages while they are on holiday..Next day a new goalkeeper arrives.Albeit great news for us..I thought and mentioned in this colum some weeks ago that an ideal situation would be to sell Ramsey and get him loaned back to us..Allthough by the end of next season it might look like we sold him cheap, depending how he develops and thrives
I think sir alex is keeping us sweet by loaning us keaton, coz he knows the sheer talent ramsey posseses, and does not want him to go to another club
