Cardiff City Squad Review: Loovens

After an up-and-down season, Cardiff City finished comforably mid-table. A scintillating start was followed by a dismal end and the same players looked half as effective as previously.

6 – GLENN LOOVENS


Glenn joined on loan from Feyenoord for the previous season(2005-2006), and made the switch permanent for this season. That in mind, the big Dutchman had a superb term and looks an excellent defender at this level.

He is no nonsence, but grew in confidence later in the season and showed some neat footwork and distribution from the back. His aerial presence is excellent and with his decent pace and impressive power – is not far off the all-round defender.

Like his captain Purse, Loovens was in and out of the team for most of the season and suffered from injury and suspension. Glenn was twice sent off this season, the first resulting in Cardiff`s first defeat of the season away at Preston North End.

Loovens is a threat from corners and freekicks in the opposition area and wins plenty of ball in the air, one example being the winner at Ninian Park against Burnley when Loovens stayed upfield and won the ball for Riccy Scimeca to drive home. With this in mind, however, Loovens will be disappointed with his solitary league goal this season – a header against Derby County.

Loovens has drawn plaudits from many quarters after another very good season. He has improved and has grown used to the physical nature of the Championship. It seems almost inevitable that bigger clubs will be enquiring before too long but City can expect a good return on their £250k investment and will hope to provide the Premiership football that Loovens has been tipped for.
