Cardiff City manager Dave Jones was satisfied to collect all three points after an understated performance by his Bluebirds. He told BBC Sport:

‘It was important to get the three points as we didn’t play as well as we can do.’

‘We probably enjoyed the clearer chance but Southampton are fighting for their lives and made it difficult for us.’

‘Our ‘keeper Peter Enckelman had little to do but Southampton tried to nullify our strengths by sitting five across the midfield to make it hard for us to play free-flowing football.’

Southampton manager Nigel Pearson watched his side waste plenty of possession and slip closer towards the drop zone:

‘That was a missed opportunity for us as I thought we could come here and win.’

‘I have a lot of positives to take out of this game and can look forward to our next match with a little more confidence but we have to take our chances and cannot make any excuses for the defeat.’
