Cardiff City travel the short distance down the M4 on Sunday to play local rivals Bristol city in the Severnside derby with both teams hoping to end the season by securing promotion to the Premiership.

Cardiff City’s midfield has been under scruting of late after being over-run in Norwich and with the contributions of our wide players coming under question (see here. Add to that the injury problems Bristol have in that area with key midfielder Marvin Elliot out and it seems a key area for the contest on Sunday.

Parry, ledley, Rae and either Whittingham/Burke are expected to make up the midfield 4 for the Bluebirds and Bristol City are targeting the central battle as the key contest.

However, Bristol City are noticably a small midfield unit, all standing under 5ft9in but Lee Johnson, expected to start on Sunday, say that should not matter as his side look to take the battle to the Bluebirds – Johnson told the Bristol Evening Post:

‘We’re the kind of players who like to use the ball, but we’re not afraid to put a foot in when we have to.’

‘If we can match Cardiff physically and win the midfield battle, our slick football will cause them problems.’

Cardiff City have routinely struggled to break down teams who set-up with five in midfield and will need to make good use of their wingers to pin back the Wurzels trio. Joe Ledley and Gavin Rae will be out-numbered but have the edge in physicality in what promises to be an exciting and crucial game.
