Cardiff City chairman Peter Ridsdale yesterday revealed that midfielder Jeff Whitley was missing and was uncontactable by the club.

The Northern Ireland midfielder had been on loan with Stoke City this season, but make little impact at the Brittannia Stadium. After being told he was avaliable for a free transfer from Ninian Park in January, Whitley then declined talks with Millwall and Rotherham – presumably holding out for offers from ‘better’ clubs. Whitley has now failed to report to Cardiff for training and has not been in contact with the club despite repeaded attempts to call the player.

The debacle is not the first time Whitley has been involved with controversy. Whitley broke a late-night curfew while on duty with Northern Ireland and subsequently lost his International place and fell out with Lawrie Sanchez.

The player is not doing himself any favours and would be well advised to report to the club and discuss his options. He has no future with the Bluebirds but needs to find another club as soon as possible.
