Cardiff defensive worries ease

Cardiff City defender Kevin McNaughton has been given the all clear and is available for selection for the Cardiff squad to face Coventry on Saturday.

McNaughton fell heavily on his head minutes after coming on as substitute during the 2-0 win over Barnsley, play was stopped for 10 minutes before McNaughton was secured enough to be stretched off. He was unconscious when physio Sean Connelly got to him, and complained of ‘pins and needles’, a symptom of spinal injury, upon coming round.

McNaughton was discharged shortly after arriving at the University Hospital of Wales, but the City doctors were taking no chances and McNaughton was sent to a specialist who yesterday gave the Scotman a definitive ‘all-clear’.

McNaughton missed his recall into the Scotland squad but will be thankful not to miss any league action, especially with Joe Ledley, the only other experienced left-back, also struggling to make the game.

The news means that Jones does not need to recruit an emergency full-back on loan (the window re-opened today) and said:

‘If Kevin had been out we would have needed a full-back, but that’s not needed now’

‘We won’t bring in people for the sake of it, it might upset the current squad.’
