Weston Moves On

Weston made 170 league appearances for Cardiff City helping them to two promotions along the way. He was one of the first signings of the Sam Hammam era costing £300k from Arsenal. He played most of his first season as a centre-back but was switched to right-back with the emergence of Danny Gabbidon and looked more comfortable as a full back. Weston has made many mistakes through slack marking and poor positional play but used his pace well to cover and was an excellent servant to Cardiff City. Numerous times he lost his place (to Steve Jenkins, Jermaine Darlington etc) but showed an exemplary attitude and determination to win back his place. Weston was targetted by some sections of the Cardiff support and many players would have hid or lacked determination (a la Andy Campbell) but Rhys was a very good signing for this club and is doubtless a good player all the same. One defining moment for Weston under Dave Jones was a poor piece of judgement to allow Millwall to equalise last season causing Neal Ardley to be switched to right-back and Weston never regained his place.

Viking Stavanger are managed by Egil Ostenstad, formerly of Blackburn and he has brought in Weston on the back of advice from now manager Mark Hughes. The club are facing a relegation battle and hope that Weston will be the one to shore up their leaky defence.

Many Thanks Rhys for your dedication and hard work and all the best for the future.
