Cardiff City face Bristol City in the Severnside derby on Sunday and will need to be on good form to get the points with both sides at the right side of the table and unbeaten thus far this season. Both sides possess quality in depth and like to play football.
The midfield battle will of course be key, and with the Bluebirds as the home side, we will be expected to force the pace. That will mean our engine room players, whether it be McPhail, Ledley or Rae will need to get the better of Marvin Elliot – the talented Bristol City midfielder whose powerful and energetic displays set his apart as a key player in the Wurzels squad and has recently been linked with £2m moves to the likes of West Brom or Wolves.
I have been impressed with Elliot`s dominance whenever I`ve seen him play, and such players are always extremely effective against our midfield – long known to be un-balanced and under-strength. He links play extremely well but is able to tackle well and disrupt our passing game unless we can find a way to move him around and exploit the space in front of Bristol`s backline.
The former Millwall man is far from prolific in front of goal but has scored 8 goals in 71 appearances for Bristol City and scored the winner against us 2 years ago after heading in a corner when Steve Thompson was sent off early on for Cardiff.
The physical presence of McCombe will need close attention, while Nicky Maynard and former Bluebirds target Dave Clarkson will be a threat.
