Cardiff City’s new striker Etien Velikonja will meet his new team-mates today after reporting for training in South Wales for the first time. Slovenian Velikonja had agreed a switch to the Bluebirds a couple of weeks ago, but on request from his previous club Maribor – manager Malky Mackay agreed to allow the striker to remain and participate in their Champions League qualifier against Zeljeznicar Sarajevo.

Maribor won both legs of the tie, and will progress in the competition but will have to do so without Velikonja. He was a late substitute in the first leg before going unused in the second leg.

Now Velikonja will begin training with Cardiff City, and look to participate in a new pre-season routine ahead of a challenging first season in the notoriously difficult Championship. He will compete against the likes of Joe Mason, Earnshaw and Rudy Gestede for places in the City attack – while Malky Mackay is still in pursuit of further striking options.

Welcome to Cardiff City Etien Velikonja.
