Up For The Cup

FA cup success for some might not be high on the agenda as Cardiff securing our Premier League survival the first priority for some but I’m one of those that’s always interested in doing well in the cup.

We lost in the 2008 final and if we can get that far again this season, or in the coming seasons under OGS, I’d be very happy and I’m glad to see that the new manager is as up for the cup now that he’s ‘the gaffer’ as he was when he was a player and winning this with Manchester United.

OGS masterminded the win over Newcastle in the third round and we go into this weekend’s fourth round against Bolton as the favourites and he’s told TheFA.com that he’s targeting success in the cup with us.

‘Any time you win a trophy, it’s the biggest moment of your life as a footballer.

‘You go into football because you love playing football, and you dream about playing in Cup Finals and winning trophies.

‘And when you do so, you feel like you’ve achieved something.

‘A Cup Final is just there, you’ve got 90 minutes to win it – so if we can get so far to lift the trophy in the next few years, that’s great.’

Is the FA cup a distraction from the Premier League? Indeed it is but I’m viewing this as a positive distraction and believe that if we can progress in the FA cup this will improve the confidence and help with our survival bid, which I do think we’ll win the battle for.

OGS wouldn’t have taken over if he didn’t think we’d do this and we also know that he’ll be taking the cup seriously, not putting out an overly ‘weakened side’ like many Premier League managers do.

Another chance for him to see the core of the squad and some fringe players for me. Progression would be a bonus, but it’s another competitive game for him to learn from at this stage.

Fringe players or not, I’d be looking for us to progress and the further we go the more up for the cup OGS will become.
