Cardiff City have a deadly attacking force, who most would say have won plenty of points for the Bluebirds, even covering over some cracks amid uncertainties about our defensive line.
However, a look at the Actim index for the Championship shows a couple of unlikely candidates rating particularly highly for CCFC. In fact, 2 of the top 5 defenders in the npower Championship are Cardiff City players. I imagine the majority of Bluebirds fans (myself included) would put Kevin McNaughton in that bracket – his energy, consistency and work-rate are outstanding and he provided a solid base at right-back and a useful overlapping presence for Chris Burke.
Additionally, £1m+ man Mark Hudson – often captain of the Bluebirds could also be expected to feature. We have a good defensive record overall and Hudson has found life somewhat easier this season without being turned regularly or making serious errors of judgement like last season.
Surprisingly, neither player features highly. Hudson just makes the top 100 (91st) while McNaughton does not feature at all. Lee Naylor (14th) and Gabor Gyepes (17th) are the men flying the flag for the Bluebirds and are the 4th and 5th highest ranked defenders respectively. Naylor`s 2 goals (one a total fluke, the other an emphatic strike) will have helped, but Gyepes inclusion in the list is certainly a surprise.
The likes of Bellamy, Chopra and co. have missed too much action to rank highly butr Whittingham, Burke, Olofinjana and co. all, rightly, make the list. Jay Bothroyd is currently the top striker.
