Cardiff City have released two youngsters as part of the summer clear-out although both had been tipped for a bright future at the club.


Matt Green is a pacy striker, signed from Newport County and who made his debut last season for the Bluebirds. However, he failed to impress and loan switches to Darlington and Oxford United followed. Although he possesses great pace, Green looks unlikely to force his way into first team reckoning and has been released.



Teenager Matt Smith was on the verge of breaking into the first team but suffered an untimely injury. Although fully recovered, Smith has not progressed as expected and the left-back has found himself surplus to requirements at Ninian Park with the emergence of fellow full-back Adam Matthews.



The youngsters being released is testament to the progress made by the club in recent years and the importance of the Academy. Whilst some of the players do not make the required grade, they often fit in elsewhere whilst others (Ledley, Gunter, Ramsey, Blake) go on to become first team players and then some….
