Former Cardiff City striker Christian Roberts was afforded a deserved and emotional farewell yesterday as a number of big names turned out to honour him in a testimonial match at Swindon Town. The striker is a Cardiff boy, but went on to have success at Bristol City and Swindon Town – fondly remembered at Cardiff, he returned to haunt us and scored against the Bluebirds on more than one occasion though he never celebrated his goals against us. A hugely popular figure in the game, Roberts struggled with addictions and personal problems before a serious knee injury ended his career prematurely at the age of 28.

Gianfranco Zola scored a hat-trick as the Chelsea team dominated. Dennis Wise, Roberto Di Matteo and Gus Poyet were also included in a star-studded Chelsea side while former Cardiff City players Steve Jenkins and Gareth Whalley also turned out for the Swindon side.

Following the match, Roberts said:

‘Now this is my time in football finished. I`m no longer Christian Roberts the professional footballer. This was the last day of it all, and it was a great way to go out.’

Cardiff City fans will surely wish all the best to Christian and hope to see him again at Bluebirds home games once again – a great and very likeable guy.
