Cardiff City’s Darren Purse is a 100% commitment man and his pride and determination have shone through since he moved to Cardiff City as Dave Jones’ first signing.
Since then, he has been automatic first choice at centre-back for much of the time and only injuries and suspensions have seen him lose that place. Now though, Cardiff City centre-back pairing of Roger Johnson and Glenn Loovens are in the driving seat at Ninian Park, and the Bluebirds have been on an impressive run of late and climbed quickly up the Championship table.
Speaking on his icons.com homepage, Purse spoke of his disappointment with the current situation:
‘I haven’t played in the last few games. Injury-wise I am fine. I’m just not getting selected at the moment. I’m very disappointed but that comes in football. You have got to take the bad parts with the good; it’s as simple as that.’
Speaking of his last start, a 2-0 defeat by Charlton in which Purse conceeded a second penalty in 2 games, the captain said:
‘Then the manager thought it was time to change things. I disagree with it; I was always going to. But the lads have done really well. It’s one of those where you can’t really complain too much.’
‘I’ve been on the bench every game and got on a couple of times. But it’s not nice when you are on the bench; you want to be playing wek-in, week-out.’
Purse is clearly not content to be a substitute, but maintained a professional approach and vowed to win his place back. There’s no doubt that all three are good centre-backs at this level and all deserve their chance.
Purse though, is attracting interest from other Championship clubs. Charlton Athletic have renewed their interest from last year while Southampton and Colchester United are keeping a close eye on the situation. A move back to his native London may suit Purse, and with his position at Cardiff City currently as a back-up – he may well be tempted.
