Cardiff City Football Club has been through a process of change over the last few years. In a few short years, there have been two promotions, record transfers in and out, a new stadium and a brush with financial ruin.
Dave Jones has brought stability to the club and the financial aspects have calmed significantly since the arrival of Peter Ridsdale. One aspect of Jones’ reign though is the high turnaround of players, every close season has seen a mass exodus following by large scale recruitment.
This season, the departures of Chris Barker and Neil Alexander (both on free transfers, both under 30 and both of whom Cardiff paid a fee for) has left the squad looking even newer and fresher than ever.
The changes mean that Cardiff City’s longest serving player is now Paul Parry. The Welsh International was brought from Hereford by previous boss Lennie Lawrence for £75,000. He is the only survivor of the Lennie Lawrence era save for Joe Ledley who was a youngster at the club at that time.
Parry was close to a Ninian Park exit last season, but stayed and refound his pace and confidence in a new right wing position where he will again operate this season.
It is more unusual these days for players to remain at one club for long periods. Ryan Giggs is one remaining example and possibly Scott Young would have fulfilled that role for Cardiff City. It’s unlikely we will have a club hero on our hands any time soon.
