No Cardiff City Future For Miguel Comminges ?

Cardiff City have consistently operated with a small playing squad, placing pressure on our first choice players and leaving us vulnerable to injuries and suspensions. However, those problems have abated somewhat this year and even with the subs bench accommodating 2 extra players this year – we are easily able to field a strong side and bench.

The downside to that is that players will be ostracised somewhat and it seems that Dave Jones has seriously miscalculated the full-back position when planning for this season. We have an abundance of options in that position and certain players must be left feeling increasingly frustrated and collecting a heft pay-packet from the club, without ever appearing for the first team.

One such player is Guadaloupe International Miguel Comminges, signed prior to last season on a free transfer from Swindon Town. Despite making numerous appearances last campaign, Comminges failed to cement a first team berth and rarely makes the playing squad this season – with actual appearances even more scarce.

He did make the bench on Saturday (in place of Gabor Gyepes) but in what situation would he have come on?!? Unfortunately for Comminges, his favoured position is right-back. Adam Matthews is the man in possession of that shirt, keeping Scotsman Paul Quinn on the bench. It`s worth noting that Kevin McNaughton, a hugely popular and influential player – has been out all season but is close to a return. That leaves Comminges as fourth place right-back and with little chance of a look-in. Darcy Blake is another option for that role but is currently on loan with Plymouth Argyle.

So Comminges would look to operate on the left, another position he has experience of but looked lost and vulnerable when playing there. Unfortunately for him he sees the experienced Mark Kennedy putting in consistent and calm performances. Additionally, Tony Capaldi is vying for that role, a natural left-back with vast Championship experience and a Northern Ireland International to boot. Paul Quinn and in particular Kevin McNaughton will be attempting to displace Kennedy and Joe Ledley and Peter Whittingham offer effective emergency cover in case of injuries mid-game.

Comminges` role looks as obscure as ever and I just cannot see him featuring in meaningful action for Cardiff City. An injury crisis of the most severe magnitude would be needed for Miguel to be called-upon, and we as a club do not have the resources to fund so many back-ups, nor a manager who favours squad rotation. Perhaps Dave Jones under-estimated Mark Kennedy`s fitness, or wrongly thought Adam Matthews would struggle to adapt.

In any case, Miguel Comminges is almost certain to be looking for a new club in January although the Bluebirds have probably trying to identify a suitable club for him previously. A loan or permanent deal would certainly be acceptable and surely clubs at League One level should be looking at a versatile and pacy defender with Championship experience?
