Various national newspapers are looking a bit silly this morning after running numerous stories announcing Alan Shearer as the new manager of Cardiff City, some even went on to name the new backroom staff such as Tommy Craig, expected to have been Shearer’s number 2.

Instead, Shearer last night broke the news that talks had been ‘unsuccessful’ and that he would not be taking over at the CCS. He told the Guardian:

‘I can confirm that I was one of the candidates that the club spoke to about the vacant manager’s position at Cardiff City. During these talks I was most impressed with the vision, ambition and determination of the owner, Dato Chan Tien Ghee, and the board.

Unfortunately those talks were unsuccessful on this occasion. Cardiff City is a great club and I wish them every success next season.’

Gethin Jenkins and Alan Whitely had been tasked with identifying the new manager, with Dato Chan Tien Ghee flying in over the weekend to meet the proposed candidate and tie up any loose ends. However, unforeseen difficulties and disagreement over candidates have seen the Chairman become more involved and whilst he and Shearer spoke at length, their views could not be aligned.

Malky Mackay has been re-instated as the Bokkies favourite for the CCFC job, but no offical contact has been made according to Watford FC – a worrying claim if, as seems certain, the Bluebirds have indeed spoken with him.

its very interesting that CCFC have spoken will Malky, as he only returned from his 2 week holiday yesterday. The club may have talked with his agent (if he has one) but if he was gonna be going to you, surley an official approach would have been made in the last week, so you could talk direct to him on his return, just a thought.

I’m under the impression that we have spoken with him, and that perhaps it was not done in exactly the right way. I hope not…..
