Cardiff City saw defensive rock Glenn Loovens depart recently, but had the advantage of knowing it was coming. It therefore came as some suprise to Bluebirds fans when instead of splashing some of the £3m transfer fee received from Celtic – we immediately moved for a relative unknown – Gabor Gyepes of Northampton Town.

The deal was simple as Gyepes had a minimum release clause in his Cobblers contract – thought to be around £200k. After that was offered, terms and a medical were quickly completed and we had signed our replacement.

Predictably, doubts were raised as to his calibre, injury problems and connection with Dave Jones’ former club Wolves once again. However, the main cause of consternation amidst Cardiff City fans appeared to be the fact he didn’t cost very much! A price similar to that paid for Loovens, Roger Johnson, Peter Whittingham but yet the fans (probably the same who lambasted Same Hammam for spending big) were vocal in their criticism.

However, a recent poll on this Vital Cardiff City website invited readers to give their thoughts on the acquisition – with the results showing faith in our new signing:

How do you feel about signing Gyepes ?

Delighted. 10%
Satisfied. 8%
Hopeful. 66%
Disappointed. 2%
Angry. 14%

The majority of Cardiff fans will always give a new player a chance, and get behind him from the off. Unfortunately there are those determined to undermine the club at every stage possible and these appear the more vocal of our fans.

I do share concerns about many aspects of the club, as is normal. However, Gyepes is a full International with good pedigree and will, hopefully, become an excellent signing for the Bluebirds.
