Cardiff City’s Northern Irish midfielder Jeff Whitley is currently on loan at Wrexham after falling out of favour at Ninian Park and then a public spat with Bluebirds Chairman Peter Ridsdale pushing further from the fold.

The player joined the Dragons on loan and has perfromed impressively so far. Although not a renowned goalscorer, Whitley popped up with an all-important winner in the 87th minute to beat Bristol Rovers.

Whitley was castised in South Wales after failing to turn up for training or respond to any messages from the club. The player himself has finally spoken out on the subject, and although he still comes across as unprofessional, he picture may not be so black as Ridsdale painted it.

That was a load of nonsense. He knew what was going on. I thought this write up in the papers made me look like some sort of rogue.’

‘My agent was in constant touch with the manager Dave Jones. He was asking about the possibility of getting my contract paid up so that I could move on.’

‘The secretary has my number and some of the City staff possess it too. I wasn’t looking at my phone and binning the calls. I made it clear to City that I would respond to a text.’

‘I didn’t get any message from the club. There was nothing at all and I am very disappointed with what has happened at Cardiff.

Whitley’s future at Cardiff City is all but over but it is good to see him helping fellow Welsh club Wrexham. Most fans would be disappointed to see Wrexham drop from the football league and boss Brian Carey is pinning his hopes on Whitley:

‘He is an asset to the squad and we’d love to have him (permanently). He’s most definitely the sort of player that you can build a team around.’
