Cardiff City captain Darren Purse made hisx return after knee surgery and a resulting infection in the win over Burnely. Called into action early after Glenn Loovens was injured, Purse played well and helped his side to a lon-awaited home win – their first in 7 months.

Purse told BBC Sport:

‘It’s great to get the monkey off our back because it’s been a long time coming.’

‘We ground out a result and full credit to everyone in the side because it was a tough old game.’

Cardiff have been playing well enough at home but have suffered because of defensive lapses and an inability to break sides down. Stoke City and Coventry City both won 1-0 while Preston rescued a late point with a superb strike leaving The Bluebirds short of home form.

Purse is a natural leader and made his presence felt in the game with some good challenges and organisation.
