Cardiff City captain Stephen McPhail has been named in Giovanni Trapattoni’s provisional Ireland squad ahead of the new manager’s first games in charge against Serbia and Colombia.

The 40 man squad will be cut to 28 ahead of the games but indicates that McPhail is in his manager’s plans. He was dfirst called up in 2000 but has not featured for the Republic of Ireland since 2004. In total, McPhail has 10 caps and even scored a goal for Ireland.

McPhail has had a decent season with the Bluebirds, his form coinciding with that of the team. Recently, the team has performed well with McPhail key to the passing style employed by the Bluebirds.
