Cardiff City look likely to start the season with their current squad minus the big centre-forward they have been searching for for months.

So many players have been linked, but no contract has been agreed as the club bide their time and try to find a quality yet affordable frontman.

Club chairman Peter Ridsdale revealed he thought it unlikely anybody would be signed before Stoke visit Ninian Park on Saturday for the curtain-opener but confirmed the club have not given up and are still striving to land the right man, Ridsdale told the Western Mail:

‘We`re talking to clubs on a daily basis about potential new signings.’

‘We`re looking at bringing in another centre-forward. We know the type of player we`re looking for, but we`re not going to be rushed, we have until August 31 when the transfer window closes, so we`ll take our time to find the right player.’

‘If I were put on the spot I would say bringing in anyone new before the Stoke match would be less likely than us actually bringing someone in.’

Steve MacLean looks a shoe-in to start the game, while Robbie Fowler is battling to be fit in time. The other starting position will go to either Warren Feeney or Jason Byrne who have both looked in determined mood and played well in pre-season.
