Cardiff City striker Steve Thompson is likely to miss the start of the new season after having surgery on a groin problem.

The Scottish International fell off an inflatable boat whilst on holiday and could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Thompson was transfer-listed after a disappointing return of just 6 goals over last season. There was no registered interest however, and Thommo was assigned the number 20 shirt in preparation for the new season.

The injury will mean that Thompson remains a Cardiff City player for the foreseeable future and will need to prove his fitness before any potential suitors make an offer. When he returns, Thompson will have to fight his way past Warren Feeney, Jason Byrne and new boy Steven MacLean to reclaim his number 9 starting position.
