Cardiff City endured a poor day at Ninian Park but their misert was compounded after a disastrous set of results damaged the Bluebirds’ play-off bid.

The weekend started well with 4th placed Preston North End losing 2-1 to Leeds United last night.

However today’s set of results could hardly have been worse:

Derby beat Barnsley 2-1 to open a 3 point gap at the top of the Championship, while 3rd place Sunderland saw off Cardiff to leap into 2nd.

West Brom scored a late winner to beat QPR, and Stoke kept their hopes alive with a 4-2 win over the Foxes of Leicester City.

The major surprise of the day was a 6-0 thrashing handed out to 5th place Wolves by under pressure Southampton. The Saints had been in poor form recently but a Saganowski hat-trick destroyed Wolves in their own back yard. The Saints have now leapfrogged Cardiff on acoount of their much improved goal difference.

Birmingham (3rd place) play tomorrow but they are 8 points ahead of Cardiff and look a sure bet for at least a play-off place.

Time now appears to be running out for Cardiff and they lie 3 points off the play-offs. The run in looks relatively kind to Cardiff, but they need to pick up points fast.
