Cardiff City striker Steve Thompson has had his red card upheld by an FAW panel and will miss the Bluebirds’ next three fixtures.

Thompson was dismissed in the 15th minute in a fierce derby game at Bristol City. His decision to scythe down Robins’ keeper Adriano Basso was a poor one with little to gain. It was a nasty challenge, and the keeper was later substituted as his leg swelled during the second half.

The decision infuriated Dave Jones and Cardiff City decided to appeal the straight red but to no avail. It was always a long shot, and the chances of success were minimal.

Steve MacLean and Robbie Fowler are on stand-by to replace Thompson in the starting line-up for Saturday’s home match against Sheffield United.
