Cardiff City’s Koumas: No Form, Favour or Fitness

Cardiff City welcomed back Jason Koumas for another loan spell in South Wales after Wigan Athletic agreed to a season-long switch with the Latics stumping up a significant portion of the Welshman’s wages.

Koumas was majestic in his previous spell, and Dave Jones was creditted with getting the most out of a talented prospect, who consistently failed to reach his potential.

However, this time around has been nothing short of a nightmarish struggle for the midfielder, who has failed to make any real impression and remains a shadow of his former mercurial self. No longer does he drop the shoulder before drifting past multiple would-be tacklers, the effortless flicks, dummies and cultured passing is gone. Further, the dangerous goal threat bursting into the box late, or with long range efforts has all but dried up.

His most meaningful contribution was a scuffed effort that looked to be flying wide, but hit Seyi Olofinjana on the backside to wrap up the game against Scunthorpe United.

In 4 starts, and 11 substitutes appearances – we are yet to see anything more than the faintest glimmer of what Blubebirds fans could realistically have expected to have seen. Wigna fans were dleighted to be shot of him, and rightly so given his significant wages, and lack of any impact. It’s not laziness that is causing his abysmal form, but a crisis of confidence, coupled with a difficult road back to fitness.

Worryingly for Koumas, the 31 year old may not have many more chances to regain his previous form and fitness. Currently out-of-favour, and not looking likely to force his way back in – his options going forward appear somewhat limited.

Koumas did not make the bench against Preston North End or Middlesbrough, with the likes of Aaron Wildig, Steve McPhail, Gavin Rae and Andy Keogh fighting harder, and looking more realistic prospects to break into the first team.

The delight shown by many on his return is now evaporated, and Koumas desperately needs a morale boost prior to a sustained period of improved form. Somehow, it just doesn’t seem like which is a great shame for such a talented player.
