Cardiff City host Southampton tomorrow as the Saints travel to Ninian Park hoping to collect more points to help stave off the threat of relegation.

Whilst many thought play-offs were a realistic opportunity for Southampton, they have remained mid-table for the majority of the campaign but have slipped worryingly recently. Although it seems the Saints are one of 5 teams that could take the last relegation place, they are by no means safe.

Southampton remain 2 points above the drop zone, but two teams below them would jump ahead by winning precious games in hand. That means that Nigel Pearson’s men will be desperate to take something from the game.

Form has not been too horrible of late, but there have been too many draws to climb the table. A priceless win over rivals Leicester City was followed by a 5-0 mauling by Hull City – their previous fixture being a 0-0 stalemate against fellow strugglers Coventry City.

Stern John will be a major threat to Cardiff, the powerful striker has an impressive 16 goals this season. He has not netted in two games now but hit 3 in 4 prior to that run.

Cardiff City have been plodding along of late, doing just enough to remain in contention for an unlikely play-off berth. Unbeaten in 4 and win home wins over high flying Bristol City and Hull City, the Bluebirds are in decent shape.

While eyes look towards a Wembley date in a week’s time, the players remain optimistic on the league chances despite mounting injury problems and an inability to bring in loan players.

There are no ex-Bluebirds returning to South Wales for the game although Dave Jones would relish a win over his former club – a difficult situation badly managed by Southampton at the time.

Cardiff City need a win to maintain any hopes they still harbour, although injuries are a problem and no-one will want to pick up another before the semi-final. Vital Cardiff sees Southampton fighting hard for a 1-1 draw, click here to read others and leave your own prediction for the game.
