Cardiff City struggled against a stubborn Burton Albion outfit and needed extra time to progress safely into the second round.

Tom Heaton, Adam Matthews and Anthony Gerrard were restored to the starting XI while loan star Jason Koumas made a welcome return to the bench.

Neither team produced any scintillating football but it was the Bluebirds who got our noses in front when Whittingham and Bothroyd combined for a neat finish – Jay’s second in 2 games. That lead was shortlived as Shaun Harrad pounced on and converted a poor backpass from Anthony Gerrard.

While City were the more likely to find a winner, we did not have it our own way with Burton seeing a decent effort deflected into the side-netting. Whitts and Chopra had efforts but we were disrupted by injuries to Bothroyd and Matthews.

Our superior firepower showed during extra time and Koumas’ parried shot allowed McCormack to finish neatly. The diminumtive Scot bagged a second from the edge of the area with Chopra rounding off the scoring following an excellent Koumas pass.
