Cardiff City are intent on bringing in midfield cover to help cope with the current injury crisis and with Riccy Scimeca and Gavin Rae both sidelined – a holding, defensive minded central midfielder is a priority.
The deadline for transfer is looming but Cardiff City are confident of bringing in cover either as a transfer, or on loan. One player targetted is Russian Alexei Smertin of Fulham and he could make the switch today if details can be arranged. Manager Roy Hodgson has confirmed Smertin would be allowed to quit Crave Cottage.
The former Chelsea player fits the mould of a combative, ball-winning midfielder but would also bring extra quality to the team. At 33, he is no youngster but we have a young team and could use some extra experience.
Hopefully the deal can be done and Smertin will become a Bluebirds player and play a key role this season.

A good call DJ -An experienced midfielder -lets hope he comes !
he said no, he doesnt wanna sign for us
cos he thinks hes great just like fowler did!
too big for his boots i feel, and would want crazy wages, however midfield is looking shaky and we do need someone!
well he has just been relased from his club
now that he is out of contract maybe he might sign permanently as he is a good experienced midfielder. but most likely he wont join us
. i think a good acquisition qould be carl flethcher from CP. he is a welsh international and Cp are willing to sell
he could do well if he gets a run in the team which he never did at fulham
